This hot spring was discovered about 1,300 years ago by an ascetic monk named Gyoki. Now it is the largest hot spring resort, with many large Japanese-style inns and a public bath that date back to the Edo period. There is no shortage of places to stroll around after your bath — these include stone-paved streets around the public bath, "Onna Shozu", a spring that has been active since the resort opened, Yakuoin Temple with Saint Myogaku's five-tiered pagoda and "A-i-u-e-o Footpath", which leads to Banshoen Garden.
